Clubbells, clubs, bear clubs (they seem to have many names) are a training form that is very interesting and very old.

Scott Sonnon is the leader of the clubbell movement and has turned this exciting form of exercise into an art form as well as a science.

Currently I am learning some of the movements with a 2 inch piece of steel. Which incidently is very good for the grip. It's not a club but it as near as for now.

I searched around the net and found this old book (from 1884)which is out of copyright now and has entered the public domain called Indian Club Swinging by Gardiner.
