Functional Fitness|Crunches or Kettlebells

Check out this video of Andy Fitting jerking a 48kg kettlebell (pimpbell) for 76 reps (38+38) in 4 mins, demonstrating incredible strength and fitness.

I love this video for 2 reasons.

Firstly, any video with Andy Fitting repping like hell on a kettlebell is a good one.

Secondly, check out the guy in the background going for it with some partial crunches.

What a contrast!

Which is most beneficial? Partial crunches or high rep kettlebell jerks?

Functionally speaking partial crunches may be good for helping you sit up in bed but I doubt very much they will have a training effect anything like high rep kettlebells.

If you could only do one exercise........ what would it be?

Kettlebell Beast Grip

Kettlebell Beast Grip

Jedd Johnson
from Diesel Crew has come up with a grand challenge of the grip using kettlebells.

Here Jed snatches the Beast kettlebell (48kg/106lb) with a glove on.

Gloves are a brilliant way to challenge your grip whilst swinging and snatching kettlebells, as are adding other things to make the handle fatter, my favourite being a strip of carpet wrapped around the handle.

Jed was challenged by Zach Coulter at the Gripmas Carol grip contest

If you're gonna try this do it away from people and outside.

Will try this over Christmas as it looks like quite a challenge.

Old School Strength with Kettlebells

Old School Strength with Kettlebells

The other week I had a go at several Old School Kettlebell exercises namely the '2 hands anyhow' which lead me on to the double kettlebell clean and heave with a 60kg kettlebell and a 48 kg kettlebell. Total of 108kg's.

Over the past few months I have had several failed attempts at the 108kg kettlebell clean so was truly pleased to be able to clean and heave overhead 5 times.

The clean itself was possible due to many weeks of intense kettlebell snatching and many double kettlebell swings, so I found the clean came quite easy but definitely was not something I expected do immediately despite the little voice in the back of my mind telling me I'd done enough to make it happen.

It's the type of thing that has come to me through training something else and not the specific thing you were trying to do which is a nice little tip.....

When you plant the seed, don't keep digging it up to see if it's grown, allow it to grow naturally and when you see it for the first time it will be a nice but expected suprise.

So here it is:

Double KB Clean and Heave 108kg

As I have been a little ill this week I have not yet had another crack at the 6min VO2max Kettlebell test with the 24kg, I plan to crack this at the weekend as I'm feeling much better now. Will post my findings and results soon

Not a Beauty and The Beast

Not a Beauty and The Beast

This is definitely not a beauty but is definitely the Beast (48kg kettlebell)
I have been pressing this fellow out for a while but finally have gotten around to videoing the act of 'Bottoms Up Pressing of THE BEAST'

Tips:

To work upto bottom up pressing the Beast (or any KB for that matter), first work on practicing the bottoms up clean and hold. Simply clean the kettlebell bottoms up and hold, rinse and repeat. It's a great test of balance wrist/grip strength. Don't forget to change hands to get both hands strong in this lift.

As all training work up with lighter weights for higher reps. Keep at it until you succeed. It's that simple.
